Pushkar – The Sacred Town of Rajasthan
Pushkar is one of the oldest and most revered towns in India. The name Pushkar is traditionally associated with the Sanskrit words Pushpa, meaning flower, and Kar, meaning hand. It is also associated with Pushkarni, meaning lake.
Surrounded by temples, bathing ghats and the Aravalli landscape, Pushkar is an ancient pilgrimage town built around its sacred lake. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Brahma is associated with the creation of Pushkar, making the town one of the most important pilgrimage destinations for Hindus.
Pushkar is particularly famous for the Brahma Temple, one of the very few major temples dedicated to Lord Brahma. The sacred Pushkar Lake, surrounded by numerous temples and ghats, is an important destination for pilgrims who come to take holy dips and perform religious rituals.
Pushkar Lake & Pilgrimage
Pushkar’s sacred lake lies at the heart of the town, with temples and bathing ghats surrounding its waters. The town has developed over centuries as an important tirtha, or holy pilgrimage place.
According to Hindu tradition, Pushkar holds a special spiritual significance, and visiting the town and worshipping at its sacred sites is considered an important part of a pilgrimage journey.
The Pushkar Camel Fair
Every year, Pushkar comes alive during the famous Pushkar Camel Fair, traditionally held in October or November according to the Hindu lunar calendar.
The fair combines spirituality, culture and commerce. Thousands of pilgrims, traders, camel owners and visitors gather in Pushkar during this extraordinary celebration.
The festival is particularly known for its colourful camel and cattle trading activities, traditional Rajasthani culture and religious ceremonies around Pushkar Lake.
During the auspicious period of the fair, thousands of devotees visit the lake to take a holy dip. The normally peaceful town transforms into a vibrant celebration filled with activity, colour and excitement.
