About Kanha National Park

Kanha National Park fascinates many visitors due to its tropical central highlands making a habitat for the wild animals. It is best known for the large varieties of wild creatures including Barasingha and the Indian Tiger in good numbers. Famously known as “Bhoor Singh”, the barasingha (deer) serves as a symbol to create awareness about wildlife preservation. Along with the spectacular lush green surroundings for the ultimate sight-seeing moment, the park is home to huge number of species of flowering plants. Core and buffer are of the jungle are part where jeep safari is permitted for wildlife tourism. The Core Zones of Kanha are: Kanha, Sarahi, Mukki and Kisli and the Buffer Zones of Kanha are: Khatia, Sijhora, Phen and Khapa.

Best Time to Visit :  The best time to visit is between October and March when the weather is pleasant and the atmosphere is cool. Being well connected to major destinations of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh, Kanha National Park is a perfect getaway for wildlife enthusiasts.

Wildlife In Kanha National Park

The park is most famous for its Bengal tiger population. These magnificent cats roam freely in the dense forests and open grasslands, and sightings, though not guaranteed, are frequent enough to attract wildlife enthusiasts from around the world. The park’s involvement in Project Tiger has been instrumental in preserving this iconic species, making it a prime destination for those hoping to see a tiger in the wild. Kanha is home to the impressive Indian bison, or gaur, sloth bear, with its shaggy coat and distinctive white chest mark, langurs and rhesus macaques, Indian roller, with its striking blue wings, and the crested serpent eagle and reptiles such as the Indian python and monitor lizards also call Kanha home.

Other attractions in Kanha

Kanha Museum
Kanha museum located inside Kanha National park is maintained by the Forest Department of the state. Located close to Khatia (Kisli) gate, this museum can be visited throughout the year and it is an ideal place for people interested in wildlife, botany, and zoology.

Lapsi Kabar
A courageous, expert hunter and guide named ‘Lapsi’ lost his life while battling a ferocious tiger in an attempt to protect his sportsmen colleagues. In his memory, a gravestone was erected at the spot where he fought the tiger. Today, Lapsi Kabar is an important spot in Kanha National Park.

Shravan Tal
A small pond located in the Kanha tiger reserve is considered to be the spot where Shravan Kumar carried his blind parents and fetched water from this pond. While fetching water, Shravan was killed by Dashratha, the father of Lord Rama. Hence, the pond is named after Shravan Kumar.
